I had the distinct honour of playing the Old Golf Course at Musselburgh Links on a visit to Scotland in 1999. I was certain that I wouldn't be able to play, as I thought that you had to be on a waiting list (like at St. Andrews). However, I arrived to pay homage to one of the most historical, yet one of the least known golfing shrines in the land. I was flabergasted by the warm reception that I received from the Starter. He equipped me with an old set of clubs and a few balls, and off I went. However, I didn't play alone. My playing partner(and guide)happened to be the Club President at the time, Davey. (He has a bunker named after him, you know!) A giant of a man, his affection for the game was clearly evident. In typical Scottish fashion, he treated me like an old friend. Even though neither of us will challenge for the Open any time soon, I came to appreciate the true Spirit of the Game as I plied my trade with the worn, slightly bent sticks that the Starter had graciously lent to me. Wow! From only expecting to be able to stand on the grounds to actually playing the same layout as so many of golf's fore-fathers! In truth, this was one of the highlights of my trip to the greatest nation on Earth. To Davey and everyone at Musselburgh, thank you. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to sample a piece of golfing heaven. May all your drives be straight and your putts roll true.
Sincerely,
Allan Singh (Mississauga, Canada)
